Why Choose This Serengeti Fly-In Safari?

This Serengeti fly-in safari is designed for travellers who want to maximise their time inside Serengeti National Park without spending long hours travelling by road from Arusha. Flying directly to Seronera places you in Central Serengeti, allowing your wildlife experience to begin soon after arrival.

More Time in the Serengeti

Flying between Arusha and the Serengeti significantly reduces the amount of your four-day itinerary spent on long road transfers. This makes the safari particularly suitable for travellers with limited time who still want several game drives and three nights inside the Serengeti.

Excellent Year-Round Wildlife Viewing

Central Serengeti supports resident wildlife throughout the year. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and numerous antelope species may be encountered, while the Seronera area is particularly well known for opportunities to search for big cats.

Three Nights at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge

Spend all three safari nights at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge, avoiding unnecessary accommodation changes. This allows you to settle into one comfortable base while exploring different sections of Central Serengeti each day.

Flexible Game-Drive Programme

Rather than following exactly the same route each day, your safari guide can adjust the programme according to wildlife sightings and local conditions. Morning, afternoon and full-day game drives provide different opportunities for observing wildlife behaviour and photographing the Serengeti landscape.

Detailed 4-Day Serengeti Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Fly to Serengeti – Afternoon Game Drive

Your 4 Days Serengeti Fly-In Safari begins in Arusha with a transfer to Arusha Airport for your scheduled flight to Serengeti National Park. The flight saves considerable driving time and provides aerial views of northern Tanzania as you travel towards the vast Serengeti ecosystem.

Upon landing at Seronera Airstrip in Central Serengeti, you will be welcomed by your professional safari driver-guide. Your first game drive begins from the airstrip as you explore the surrounding Seronera plains and river valleys.

Keep watch for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and different antelope species. Central Serengeti is also an important area for predators, providing opportunities to search for lions, cheetahs and leopards.

Continue your afternoon game drive before heading to Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge for check-in, dinner and your first night in the Serengeti.

Accommodation: Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Main Activity: Afternoon Serengeti game drive

Day 2: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Game Drive

After breakfast at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge, depart with your driver-guide for a full-day game drive in Serengeti National Park. With the entire day available for wildlife viewing, your guide can explore different areas according to recent sightings, seasonal conditions and animal movements.

The Central Serengeti landscape combines open grasslands, acacia woodland, river valleys and rocky kopjes, creating habitats for a remarkable variety of wildlife. Search for prides of lions resting near the plains, cheetahs scanning open grassland and leopards around suitable riverine habitats. Elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, zebras and numerous antelope species may also be encountered.

Depending on the day's programme, enjoy a picnic lunch in the park or arrange the game drive around a lodge lunch.

Continue exploring during the afternoon before returning to Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Main Activity: Full-day Serengeti game drive

Day 3: Full-Day Central Serengeti Safari

Enjoy breakfast before setting out for another full day of game viewing in Central Serengeti. Having a second complete day in the park gives you the opportunity to explore areas you may not have reached the previous day and to revisit locations where interesting wildlife activity has been reported.

Your guide will plan the route around the day's conditions and your interests. You may encounter elephants moving through woodland, giraffes browsing acacia trees, hippos gathering around pools and large herds of zebras, wildebeest and other grazing animals spread across the plains.

Predator sightings are another highlight of Central Serengeti, although wildlife encounters are always natural and cannot be guaranteed. Depending on the season, migrating wildebeest and zebra herds may also be present in or around the wider Serengeti ecosystem.

An optional hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at additional cost, subject to availability.

Return to Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge for your final dinner and overnight in the Serengeti.

Morning game drives can be particularly rewarding because temperatures are generally cooler and many animals are active. Your guide will choose the route according to available time, wildlife activity and your scheduled flight departure.

Continue towards Seronera Airstrip, arriving with sufficient time for check-in. Say goodbye to your safari guide and board your scheduled flight back to Arusha.

Wildlife You May See in the Serengeti

The Central Serengeti and Seronera Valley offer rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year. Its combination of open grasslands, rocky kopjes, riverine areas and acacia woodland supports both predators and large populations of herbivores, making it particularly suitable for a short fly-in safari.

During your game drives, wildlife sightings may include:

  • Lions – often encountered around the open plains and kopjes

  • Leopards – sometimes seen around riverine woodland and trees

  • Cheetahs – particularly associated with open grassland

  • African elephants

  • Cape buffaloes

  • Giraffes

  • Wildebeest

  • Zebras

  • Hippos

  • Spotted hyenas

  • Warthogs

  • Elands, topis, impalas and other antelope species

The Serengeti is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with more than 500 bird species recorded across the ecosystem. Tanzania National Parks notes that the Serengeti contains Africa's classic big-game species as well as extensive birdlife.

Depending on your travel dates and the natural movement of the herds, you may also encounter part of the Great Wildebeest Migration. However, migration locations vary according to rainfall and grazing conditions, so sightings in Central Serengeti should never be guaranteed.

Wildlife is completely free-ranging, and specific animal sightings cannot be guaranteed. Your safari guide will use local knowledge and recent sightings to plan each day's game drives.

Best Time for a 4 Days Serengeti Fly-In Safari

A 4 Days Serengeti Fly-In Safari can be enjoyed throughout the year, and Central Serengeti is particularly attractive because it supports resident wildlife even when the main migration herds are elsewhere. TANAPA describes Serengeti as a year-round destination, while generally highlighting the dry season for easier wildlife viewing.

June to October – Dry Season

The dry season is one of the most popular periods for a Serengeti safari. Vegetation becomes less dense, and animals are often easier to observe around remaining water sources. Days are generally dry and suitable for game drives.

The Great Migration moves through different parts of the wider Serengeti ecosystem during this period, so the location of the largest herds depends on the particular month and rainfall patterns.

November to December – Short Rains

The short rains transform the landscape, producing greener plains and attractive conditions for photography. Wildlife remains abundant, while migratory birds add further interest for birdwatchers.

Rainfall usually comes in intermittent showers rather than continuous rain, although weather patterns vary from year to year.

January to March – Calving Season

January through March is an important period for the Great Migration in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region, particularly during the main calving period.

Because Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge is in Central Serengeti, travellers whose primary objective is witnessing the calving season should understand that the largest concentrations of migratory herds are normally farther south during this period. Central Serengeti nevertheless continues to provide excellent resident wildlife viewing.

April to May – Green Season

The longer rains generally occur during this period. The Serengeti becomes exceptionally green, with dramatic skies and fewer visitors in many areas.

Rain can affect some roads and game-drive conditions, but wildlife viewing continues. This season can appeal to photographers and travellers who prefer greener scenery and a quieter safari atmosphere.

So, When Should You Travel?

There is no single month that is best for every traveller. Choose your travel period according to what matters most to you: general wildlife viewing, migration movements, photography, birdlife, weather or fewer visitors.

For this particular itinerary at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge, Central Serengeti remains a strong year-round choice rather than a package that depends entirely on the Great Migration being in one specific location.

Serengeti Fly-In Safari Flights & Baggage Information

One of the main advantages of this Serengeti fly-in safari is avoiding the lengthy road journey between Arusha and Serengeti National Park. Scheduled bush flights operate between Arusha and Serengeti airstrips, with Seronera Airstrip serving Central Serengeti. TANAPA confirms that Serengeti has an all-weather airstrip at Seronera and receives scheduled and charter flights from Arusha and other Tanzanian destinations.

Arusha to Serengeti Flight

On Day 1, you will transfer to Arusha Airport for your scheduled bush flight to Seronera Airstrip. Some scheduled services may make intermediate stops at other airstrips depending on the day's flight routing.

After landing at Seronera, you will meet your safari driver-guide and begin your game drive in Central Serengeti.

On Day 4, your guide will transfer you back to Seronera Airstrip for your scheduled flight to Arusha.

Exact flight times and routing are confirmed with your final travel documents and remain subject to the airline's operating schedule.

Bush Flight Baggage Allowance

Baggage allowances on small safari aircraft are considerably more restrictive than those on international flights.

For example, Coastal Aviation currently permits a maximum of 15 kg (33 lb) per passenger, including hand luggage, and strongly recommends soft-sided bags because of the limited baggage compartments on safari aircraft.

For your safari, always follow the baggage allowance stated on your confirmed flight ticket, as limits can vary by airline, route and aircraft.

We recommend:

  • Using a soft-sided duffel or safari bag

  • Avoiding oversized rigid suitcases

  • Packing only what you require during the four-day safari

  • Keeping essential medication and important travel documents easily accessible

  • Checking your confirmed airline's baggage allowance before departure

If you are travelling with additional luggage for a longer Tanzania or Zanzibar holiday, ask us about available luggage-storage or excess-baggage arrangements before your safari.

Important Flight Information

Scheduled safari flights operate using smaller aircraft and may involve stops at several bush airstrips to collect or drop off passengers. Flight schedules can also be affected by operational requirements, weather conditions and passenger routing.

We therefore recommend allowing sufficient connection time between your Serengeti bush flight and any international or onward flight departing from Arusha or Kilimanjaro, particularly when travelling on separate tickets. Exact flight times and routing will be confirmed in your final travel documents.

Who Is This Safari Best For?

This Central Serengeti safari is designed for travellers who want a comfortable wildlife experience while maximising the amount of time spent inside Serengeti National Park. By flying between Arusha and Seronera, you avoid lengthy road transfers and can dedicate more of your four-day itinerary to game viewing.

This safari is particularly suitable for:

  • Couples looking for a comfortable and well-paced Serengeti safari.

  • Honeymooners who prefer a fly-in experience with three nights at one tented lodge.

  • Families wanting to reduce long driving distances between Arusha and the Serengeti.

  • Wildlife photographers who want two full days plus additional morning and afternoon game drives in Central Serengeti.

  • First-time safari travellers looking to experience one of Tanzania's best-known wildlife destinations.

  • Returning safari travellers who want to concentrate their time on the Serengeti rather than combine several parks.

  • Travellers with limited time who want a short Tanzania safari without sacrificing multiple game drives.

  • Guests combining safari and Zanzibar, as the itinerary can form part of a longer Tanzania holiday.

Because all three nights are spent at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge, this itinerary is also suitable for travellers who prefer staying in one safari property rather than changing accommodation every night.

What to Pack for Your Serengeti Safari

Packing light is particularly important for a Serengeti fly-in safari because small safari aircraft have more restrictive baggage limits than international flights. A soft-sided travel or duffel bag is generally preferable to a large hard-shell suitcase.

For your four-day Serengeti safari, consider packing:

  • Lightweight, comfortable clothing in neutral colours

  • A warm fleece or light jacket for cool early-morning game drives

  • Comfortable closed walking shoes or trainers

  • Sun hat and sunglasses

  • High-SPF sunscreen

  • Insect repellent

  • Personal toiletries and medication

  • Camera, spare batteries and memory cards

  • Binoculars

  • Phone and camera chargers

  • Universal travel adapter

  • Small day bag

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Passport and necessary travel documents

Temperatures can change considerably between early mornings and warmer afternoons, so light layers are particularly useful.

If you are carrying photographic equipment, check its weight against the baggage allowance stated on your confirmed bush-flight ticket before travelling. Avoid packing unnecessary heavy items and oversized hard-sided luggage.

Tanzania Safari Expert Insights

A four-day Serengeti fly-in itinerary works particularly well for travellers who want to concentrate their time on one wildlife-rich area rather than spend several days travelling between different national parks. Flying into Seronera and staying three nights at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge gives you two complete safari days, together with additional game-viewing opportunities on your arrival and departure days.

Don’t Chase the Great Migration Every Month

One of the most common misconceptions about the Serengeti is that the Great Migration is always in the same place. It is not. The herds move through the wider Serengeti ecosystem in response to seasonal rainfall, grazing and water availability.

If the migration is your main reason for travelling, your accommodation and safari area should be selected according to your travel month. Central Serengeti, however, remains valuable even when the largest migration herds are elsewhere because the Serengeti supports wildlife throughout the year. Tanzania National Parks describes the Serengeti as a year-round destination.

Central Serengeti Is About More Than the Migration

For this itinerary, we recommend focusing on the Seronera and Central Serengeti ecosystem rather than spending valuable safari time making very long drives simply to reach distant migration herds.

Central Serengeti offers a mixture of open plains, river systems, kopjes and woodland habitats. The wider park supports the classic African big-game species and is particularly important for predators and plains game.

Two Full Game-Drive Days Make a Difference

For a four-day fly-in itinerary, we prefer three nights in the Serengeti rather than trying to combine several parks. Day 1 and Day 4 are partly occupied by flights, leaving Days 2 and 3 for unrestricted full-day game drives.

This gives your guide greater flexibility. If an interesting predator sighting is reported in a particular area, or wildlife activity is especially productive one morning, there is less pressure to leave early simply because you need to travel to another destination.

Early Mornings Are Worth It

We recommend starting at least some game drives early. Temperatures are cooler, the light is excellent for photography, and mornings can provide opportunities to observe predators and other wildlife before the heat of the day.

You do not necessarily need to stay out from sunrise until sunset every day. Your guide can balance longer game drives with time at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge according to your interests and energy levels.

Bring Binoculars Even If You Have a Good Camera

A camera is excellent for recording your safari, but binoculars often provide a better way to observe distant animals and behaviour. They are particularly useful for locating predators across the plains and for appreciating the Serengeti's diverse birdlife.

The Serengeti has more than 540 recorded bird species, so binoculars can add considerably to the experience even for travellers whose main interest is mammals.

Our Expert Tip

For a 4-day Serengeti safari, avoid trying to cover too much ground. Spending three nights at one well-positioned Central Serengeti lodge gives you more time to watch wildlife rather than constantly packing, checking out and driving to another property.

If your priority is specifically the Great Migration, calving season or river crossings, tell us your travel month before booking. We can advise whether Central Serengeti is appropriate or whether your itinerary would benefit from accommodation in another part of the Serengeti ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 4 days enough for a Serengeti safari?

Yes. A 4 Days Serengeti Fly-In Safari gives you three nights in Serengeti National Park, including two full days for game drives plus additional wildlife viewing on your arrival and departure days. Flying between Arusha and the Serengeti also avoids the lengthy road journey, allowing more of your holiday to be spent inside the park.

Where do we stay during this Serengeti fly-in safari?

You will spend three nights at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge in Central Serengeti. Staying at one property throughout the safari avoids changing accommodation every day and provides a convenient base for exploring the Seronera area and surrounding plains.

Where does the safari start and end?

The itinerary starts and ends in Arusha, Tanzania. You will fly from Arusha Airport to Seronera Airstrip in the Serengeti on Day 1 and return by scheduled bush flight on Day 4.

How long is the flight from Arusha to Serengeti?

Direct flying time is generally around one to one-and-a-half hours, but scheduled bush flights may make intermediate stops at other airstrips. Your final flight times and routing will be confirmed before travel.

What wildlife can we see in Central Serengeti?

Central Serengeti supports excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. Depending on wildlife movements and luck, you may encounter lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, hyenas and numerous antelope species.

Wildlife sightings are natural and cannot be guaranteed.

Can we see the Great Migration on this safari?

Possibly, depending on your travel dates and the natural movement of the herds. The Great Migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year, so it is not permanently located in Central Serengeti.

If seeing the migration is your main priority, let us know your travel month so that we can advise on the most appropriate safari area.

What is the best time for this Serengeti fly-in safari?

The Serengeti can be visited throughout the year. June to October generally offers drier conditions, November and December bring greener landscapes following the short rains, January to March coincides with the migration's southern Serengeti and Ndutu calving period, while April and May form part of the greener rainy season.

The best time for you depends on whether your priority is general wildlife viewing, the Great Migration, photography, birdwatching or fewer visitors.

Is this a private safari?

Yes. This is a private Serengeti safari, with a dedicated professional driver-guide and 4×4 safari vehicle reserved for your travelling party during the game-drive programme.

The scheduled bush flights between Arusha and Serengeti are shared services and may carry other passengers. After landing at Seronera Airstrip, you will meet your safari driver-guide and continue with your private game-drive programme.

What type of vehicle is used for the game drives?

Game drives are conducted in a 4×4 safari vehicle suitable for Serengeti conditions and wildlife viewing.

What is the baggage allowance on the Serengeti bush flight?

Baggage allowances vary by airline and aircraft. Safari airlines commonly have stricter weight and luggage-size restrictions than international carriers, and soft-sided bags are strongly recommended.

Always follow the baggage allowance stated on your confirmed flight ticket.

Can I add a Serengeti hot-air balloon safari?

Yes. A hot-air balloon safari can be added to the itinerary subject to availability, weather and operating conditions. Advance booking is recommended, particularly during busy travel periods.

Is the safari suitable for children?

Yes, the itinerary can work well for families because flying reduces the amount of time children spend on long road transfers. Parents should nevertheless consider their children's comfort with several hours of game driving when planning full-day activities.

Can I combine this safari with Zanzibar?

About Your Tanzania Safari Expert

John Peter – East Africa Safari Specialist

This 4 Days Serengeti Fly-In Safari has been developed and reviewed by John Peter, an East Africa safari specialist with practical experience planning wildlife itineraries across Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

Through East Africa Jungle, John works with travellers to design safari programmes around their available time, preferred accommodation, wildlife interests and wider East African travel plans. His itinerary planning covers practical safari considerations such as driving distances, bush flights, park logistics, accommodation locations and seasonal wildlife movements.

For Serengeti itineraries, particular attention is given to choosing the correct safari area for the traveller's dates. The Serengeti is a vast ecosystem, and the best location for a general wildlife safari is not necessarily the same location for travellers specifically interested in wildebeest calving or migration river crossings.

This itinerary has therefore been designed around three nights in Central Serengeti, reducing unnecessary accommodation changes while providing sufficient time for morning, afternoon and full-day game drives.

Editorial Review & Fact Checking

This 4 Days Serengeti Fly-In Safari – Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge itinerary has been prepared and reviewed by the East Africa Jungle safari team using practical destination knowledge and current safari-planning information.

Before publication, the itinerary is checked for important travel details including Serengeti National Park routing, Central Serengeti location information, Seronera Airstrip access, accommodation details, game-drive logistics, seasonal wildlife information and bush-flight considerations.

Safari information can change over time. Flight schedules, park fees, accommodation rates, baggage allowances and operating conditions may be updated by airlines, lodges, government authorities and park-management bodies. For this reason, final operational details are reconfirmed when your safari is booked.

Wildlife and Great Migration information should also be treated as guidance rather than a guarantee. The Serengeti is a natural ecosystem, and animal movements vary according to rainfall, grazing conditions and other environmental factors.
