At a Glance

This 6-day Maasai Mara and Amboseli safari from Diani Beach or Mombasa combines two of Kenya's best-known wildlife destinations in one coast-to-safari itinerary. Experience Amboseli's elephant herds and views toward Mount Kilimanjaro before continuing to the Maasai Mara for predator viewing, classic savannah landscapes and seasonal Great Migration activity.

The USD 1,250 per person starting price is based on the group-joining safari with a shared 4×4 Land Cruiser. Private safaris with a dedicated Land Cruiser are also available. On Day 6, the standard package includes the Madaraka Express (SGR) from Nairobi to Mombasa, followed by your transfer to Mombasa or Diani Beach. A scheduled Nairobi–Mombasa flight can be arranged as an optional upgrade.

Why Choose This 6-Day Maasai Mara & Amboseli Safari?

This safari combines two of Kenya’s most iconic wildlife destinations with convenient travel from Diani Beach or Mombasa. Amboseli offers exceptional elephant viewing, open landscapes and memorable views of Mount Kilimanjaro, while the Maasai Mara is renowned for its big cats, diverse resident wildlife and seasonal Great Migration activity.

The six-day itinerary provides two nights in Amboseli and three nights in the Maasai Mara, allowing meaningful game-viewing time in both destinations rather than rushing between parks.

Choose a group-joining safari from USD 1,250 per person or upgrade to a private safari with a dedicated 4×4 Land Cruiser. Park fees, accommodation, meals, scheduled game drives and the Day 6 SGR journey from Nairobi to Mombasa are included as specified in the itinerary.

This itinerary is particularly convenient for travellers already staying on the Kenya coast who want to combine a Diani or Mombasa beach holiday with a classic Kenya wildlife safari.

6 Days Maasai Mara & Amboseli Safari Itinerary

Cheetah scanning the savannah during a Maasai Mara safari in Kenya

Day 1: Diani Beach/Mombasa → Amboseli National Park

Your safari begins with an early-morning pickup from your hotel or agreed meeting point in Diani Beach or Mombasa. Meet your professional safari driver-guide and travel inland by 4×4 Land Cruiser toward Amboseli National Park, passing through the changing landscapes of southeastern Kenya.

The road journey takes approximately 7–9 hours, depending on your pickup location, traffic, road conditions and stops along the way. Lunch will be arranged according to the day’s route and departure time.

On arrival in the Amboseli area, check in at your lodge or camp. If arrival time allows, enjoy an afternoon game drive before returning to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Amboseli is particularly known for its large elephant herds and open landscapes beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, which may be visible when weather conditions are clear.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Amboseli

Day 2: Full-Day Safari in Amboseli National Park

After breakfast, spend the day exploring Amboseli National Park on morning and afternoon game drives or an extended game-viewing programme arranged with your guide.

Amboseli’s combination of open plains, seasonal lake areas, acacia woodland and permanent wetlands supports a wide variety of wildlife. Elephants are frequently encountered, while other possible sightings include buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, lions, hyenas and numerous bird species.

Your guide will plan the day around current wildlife activity and local conditions. Early mornings can also provide some of the best opportunities for clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro, although visibility depends on the weather.

Return to your lodge or camp for dinner and your second night in Amboseli.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Amboseli

Day 3: Amboseli → Maasai Mara National Reserve

After an early breakfast, depart Amboseli for the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

This is the longest road-transfer day of the safari, taking approximately 9–10 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and scheduled stops. Lunch will be arranged en route.

The journey takes you across central Kenya toward the southwest, with changing landscapes along the way. On arrival in the Maasai Mara area in the late afternoon or early evening, check in at your lodge or tented camp and relax after the journey.

Because of the long transfer from Amboseli, there is no scheduled game drive on Day 3. This avoids creating unrealistic expectations about the amount of game-viewing time available after arrival.

Dinner and overnight at your Maasai Mara accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Maasai Mara

Day 4: Full-Day Maasai Mara Game Drive

After breakfast, spend a full day exploring the Maasai Mara National Reserve in your 4×4 safari vehicle.

The reserve is one of Kenya’s most productive wildlife areas and provides opportunities to search for lions, elephants, buffalo, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and, with luck, leopards and other species.

Your guide will plan the day's route according to wildlife movements, road conditions and recent sightings. During the Great Migration season, generally associated with July to October, large herds may be present in the wider Mara ecosystem, although the timing and location of wildlife movements vary each year and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the reserve or return to your accommodation for lunch, depending on the day's game-drive plan.

Return to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Maasai Mara

Day 5: Maasai Mara – Full-Day Game Viewing

Enjoy another day dedicated to exploring the Maasai Mara, giving you additional time to visit different wildlife areas and follow sightings that may not have been accessible the previous day.

Your guide will use local knowledge and current wildlife information to determine the most productive game-viewing areas. Having a second full day in the Mara also gives you more flexibility rather than trying to experience the reserve in a single game drive.

Guests who have pre-booked a hot-air balloon safari will normally take part early in the morning before continuing with the day's safari programme. An optional Maasai village visit can also be arranged.

Return to your accommodation for dinner and your final night in the Maasai Mara.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Maasai Mara

Day 6: Maasai Mara → Nairobi → SGR Train to Mombasa → Diani Beach

After an early breakfast, check out and begin the road journey from the Maasai Mara to Nairobi. Depending on departure time and road conditions, there may be opportunities for wildlife viewing as you leave the Mara area.

On arrival in Nairobi, transfer to the railway station for your SGR train journey to Mombasa. Your SGR ticket is included in the standard safari package.

After arriving in Mombasa, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Mombasa or Diani Beach, marking the end of your six-day safari.

Travellers who prefer a faster return to the coast may upgrade from the SGR journey to a scheduled Nairobi–Mombasa flight at an additional cost, subject to availability.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Included Return: Nairobi–Mombasa SGR train + Mombasa/Diani hotel transfer

Best Time for a Maasai Mara & Amboseli Safari

Amboseli and Maasai Mara offer rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year, but conditions change with rainfall, wildlife movements and visitor numbers. The best time depends on whether your priority is the Great Migration, dry-season wildlife viewing, greener landscapes or fewer visitors.

SeasonMonthsWhat to Expect
Warm Dry SeasonJanuary–MarchWarm, generally dry conditions and good resident wildlife viewing. Amboseli can offer excellent early-morning Kilimanjaro views, while young animals and predator activity may also be encountered.
Green SeasonApril–MayThe long rains bring greener landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent photographic scenery. Some roads can become muddy and wildlife may be more dispersed.
Dry & Migration SeasonJune–OctoberExcellent general wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around water sources. The Great Migration usually reaches the Maasai Mara during part of this period, although exact timing varies each year.
Short Rains / Green SeasonNovember–DecemberLandscapes become greener following the short rains, with good resident wildlife, birdlife and generally fewer visitors than during the peak migration months.

Great Migration note: The migration is a natural, seasonal wildlife movement influenced by rainfall and grazing conditions. Its exact location and timing vary from year to year, and river crossings or specific wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Expert Tips for This Safari

1. Look for Kilimanjaro early in Amboseli.

Mount Kilimanjaro is often clearest in the early morning before clouds build around the summit. Your guide can plan morning game drives around suitable viewpoints, although mountain visibility always depends on weather conditions.

2. Prepare for a long transfer on Day 3.
The road journey from Amboseli to the Maasai Mara takes approximately 9–10 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops. We therefore treat Day 3 primarily as a transfer day, with no scheduled game drive after arrival.

3. Use your two full Mara days strategically.
Days 4 and 5 provide the main Maasai Mara game-viewing time. Rather than trying to cover the entire reserve, your guide will plan routes according to recent wildlife activity, road conditions and seasonal movements.

4. Treat the Great Migration as seasonal wildlife, not a guaranteed event.
The July–October period generally offers opportunities to encounter large migratory herds in the wider Maasai Mara ecosystem, but exact timing, herd locations and river crossings are determined by natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

5. Decide early if you prefer SGR or a flight back to the coast.
The standard package includes the Nairobi–Mombasa SGR train on Day 6, followed by your transfer to Mombasa or Diani Beach. A scheduled Nairobi–Mombasa flight can be arranged at an additional cost, subject to availability.

6. Pre-book a Maasai Mara balloon safari.
If a hot-air balloon safari is important to you, we recommend arranging it before travel, particularly during busy periods. Balloon flights normally depart early in the morning and are subject to availability and weather conditions.

6. How long is the drive from Amboseli to Maasai Mara?

The drive from Amboseli to Maasai Mara is approximately 9–10 hours and is the longest road-transfer day of the safari.

Because of this distance, no scheduled game drive is planned for Day 3. The itinerary instead provides two full days of game viewing in Maasai Mara.

7. Can I see the Great Migration on this safari?

The Great Migration may be seen in the Maasai Mara during the migration season, generally between July and October, but its exact timing and location depend on rainfall and natural wildlife movement.

10. Can this 6-day safari itinerary be customised?

Yes. The itinerary can be customised for private safari bookings according to your travel dates, accommodation preferences, group size and onward holiday plans.
