Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Elephant Safari & Baobab Landscapes

Your Tanzania wildlife safari and Zanzibar beach holiday begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha. Meet your professional English-speaking safari guide and depart for Tarangire National Park, approximately 2–2.5 hours away.

Upon arrival, begin your first exciting game drive through a landscape of ancient baobab trees, open savannahs and seasonal swamps. Tarangire is particularly famous for its large elephant herds, but the park also supports giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest, lions and numerous bird species.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing your afternoon wildlife exploration. Your guide will adjust the route according to wildlife activity and seasonal conditions.

Later, drive to your lodge for dinner, relaxation and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Tarangire Simba Lodge or similar Meals: Lunch & Dinner Activities: Tarangire game drive, wildlife photography and scenic landscapes

Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park – Journey to the Endless Plains

After an early breakfast, depart your lodge and travel towards the world-famous Serengeti National Park, passing through the spectacular Ngorongoro highlands.

Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes as your guide explains the region's wildlife, geography and Maasai cultural heritage. Continue through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards the Serengeti, where rolling highlands gradually give way to expansive grasslands.

After a picnic lunch, enter Serengeti National Park and begin an afternoon game drive, depending on your arrival time. Look out for lions, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes and various antelope species.

The Serengeti offers outstanding year-round wildlife viewing and is internationally renowned for the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Arrive at your tented camp in the evening, enjoy dinner and settle in for a night surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp or similar Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities: Scenic Ngorongoro highlands drive, Serengeti game drive and wildlife photography

Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Safari – Big Five & Wildlife Encounters

Wake up to the sounds of the Serengeti wilderness and enjoy breakfast before departing for a full-day wildlife safari in one of Africa's most celebrated national parks.

Your private safari guide will take you through diverse habitats, including open plains, rocky kopjes and riverine woodlands. These environments support lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas and numerous herbivore species.

Depending on the season and wildlife movements, you may encounter large herds of wildebeest and zebras travelling across the plains. The Serengeti is also an excellent destination for observing predator behaviour and photographing wildlife in natural surroundings.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated area before continuing your afternoon game drive.

Return to your tented camp in the late afternoon for dinner and relaxation beneath the African night sky.

Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp or similar Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities: Full-day Serengeti game drive, Big Five search, wildlife photography

Continue to Ngorongoro Crater, one of Tanzania's most remarkable wildlife destinations. Descend into the crater for a scheduled game drive, where you may encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, hyenas and, with luck, the endangered black rhinoceros.

Your guide will plan the crater visit according to the day's driving distances, park regulations and available daylight. Enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing towards Arusha.

Arrive at your hotel for dinner and overnight, ready for your flight to Zanzibar the following day.

Alternatively, visit a spice plantation to learn about the cultivation of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and other aromatic spices that contributed to Zanzibar's historical trading importance.

Ocean lovers may choose an optional snorkelling excursion or traditional dhow sailing experience, depending on weather and sea conditions.

If you prefer relaxation, spend the day enjoying the resort's facilities and beautiful beachfront setting.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania for a Wildlife Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday

Tanzania offers rewarding wildlife safaris and Zanzibar beach holidays throughout the year, although the best travel period depends on your interests, preferred weather and budget. The northern safari circuit provides excellent opportunities to observe elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes and other wildlife, while Zanzibar offers warm tropical temperatures and beautiful Indian Ocean beaches.

For travellers combining Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar, the dry months from June to October are particularly popular for wildlife viewing. January to March also offers rewarding safari conditions, while April and May generally bring heavier rainfall and potentially more affordable accommodation.

Important Migration Information: The standard 8-day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday includes two nights in Central Serengeti and is primarily designed for year-round wildlife viewing. It does not automatically include the Ndutu calving grounds or the Northern Serengeti Mara River crossing areas.

Travellers wishing to focus on the Great Migration can request a seasonal itinerary variation. Additional driving distances, accommodation changes or flight arrangements may affect the package price.

Wildebeest river crossings and other wildlife sightings are natural events and cannot be guaranteed.

Best Time for Zanzibar Beach Holidays

Zanzibar is a year-round tropical destination, but the most favourable beach conditions generally occur during two periods.

June to October – Popular Dry-Season Beach Holidays

These months usually bring relatively dry weather, comfortable temperatures and favourable conditions for beach relaxation. They are particularly suitable for travellers combining a Serengeti wildlife safari with several days on Zanzibar's beaches.

December to February – Warm Tropical Beach Escapes

This period is typically hotter and more humid, with many sunny days suitable for swimming, beach relaxation and water activities. It is especially popular for Christmas holidays, honeymoon trips and travellers escaping colder climates.

March to May – Rainy-Season Travel

Zanzibar generally experiences its heaviest rainfall during April and May. Some beach resorts may temporarily close or reduce services, while marine activities can be affected by weather and sea conditions.

Which Months Do We Recommend?

For the best overall combination of mainland wildlife viewing and Zanzibar beach relaxation, July, August, September and October are particularly attractive.

Travellers interested in the wildebeest calving season should consider January or February, with an itinerary adjusted to include Ndutu or Southern Serengeti.

For travellers seeking fewer visitors and potentially lower accommodation rates, March, May and November may offer good value, provided they are comfortable with less predictable weather.

Honeymooners can choose upgraded safari lodges, romantic Zanzibar resorts and optional private experiences. Child prices depend on age, accommodation policies and applicable park fees.

8. How do I book, and what deposit is required?

To book, send your preferred travel dates, number of adults, children's ages and accommodation preferences. We will prepare a detailed quotation and confirm availability before requesting payment. Our standard deposit is 30% of the safari cost, with a further 30% due 21 days before travel and the remaining balance payable before or upon arrival as specified in your booking confirmation. For bookings made within 21 days of departure, a 40% initial deposit applies. The applicable cancellation and payment terms will be provided before confirmation.

Safari Guide & Expert Insights – Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar

1. Plan Serengeti Game Drives Around Wildlife Activity

Early mornings and late afternoons often provide rewarding wildlife-viewing opportunities. Your safari guide will adjust game-drive routes according to animal movements, weather, park regulations and the location of your accommodation.

2. Allow Sufficient Time for Ngorongoro and Airport Transfers

Travelling between Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Arusha involves substantial driving distances. We recommend planning the crater visit and onward Zanzibar flight carefully to allow adequate time for wildlife viewing, airport check-in and transfers.

3. Choose Your Zanzibar Beach Location Carefully

Matemwe offers a quieter coastal setting, but swimming conditions vary with the tides. Travellers who prefer beaches with generally easier swimming access can request alternative resorts around Nungwi or Kendwa, subject to availability and budget.
